I looked up the definition of hybrid the other day, mostly because I’m tired of talking about “hybrid workplaces”, and was surprised to find this:
“…the offspring of two plants or animals of different species or varieties, such as a mule (a hybrid of a donkey and a horse).”
That pushed my brain into wondering how much energy is being expended in looking around to what everyone else is doing about their offices and getting people back in, or out, or around. You get the idea. In other words, how many hours do you spend looking at other people’s mules? How about instead of looking around you think about reforming your practices with some internal examination?
- What if assigning work was done as who could best be developed through this opportunity instead of who is in my line of sight?
- What if we built teams to examine our work flows and included everyone who touches the flow? And gave them the charter of achieving the organization goal, not the individual contributor (aka attorney) goal?
These are only two of many questions that could reshape your firm. And also engage your workforce in new ways. Oh, and let’s throw in the sense of belonging and inclusion that arrives from valuing your people.
